Spirit of ’29

1-5 pm, Richmond Elks Lodge

Spirit of ’29 was founded in 1982 by banjo/guitarist Eliot Kenin. The original band members were Eliot, trumpeter/singer Mike Reilly, and Joe Sosensky on clarinet and sax. We were joined shortly after by Mike Harryman, who became the main tuba player for many years.

In its early days, Spirit of ’29 was known as a street band, busking primarily around the UC Berkeley campus, with frequent performances at festivals (Including the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee), as well as jazz clubs, private parties, wedding receptions, shopping malls, etc. There were two notable engagements over the years: five months performing at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul, Korea; and two seasons playing at Pac Bell (now Oracle) Park for the SF Giants games.

Now in its fifth decade, Spirit of ’29 is still going strong. Current band members are:

  • Jim Gammon – trump
  • Joe Sosensky – clarinet/sax
  • Rick Elmore – trombone, tuba
  • Randy Johnson – Banjo/guitar, vocals
  • Marty Eggers – tuba, string bass.
